Mewing: The Honest Beginner's Guide

Tongue posture, viral promises and scientific reality: here is what mewing can actually deliver, how to practice it correctly, and where its effects end.

Mewing: The Honest Beginner's Guide

It is impossible to take an interest in looksmaxxing without coming across mewing. Popularized by the controversial work of British orthodontist John Mew, this practice consists of keeping the tongue pressed against the palate. On social media, it is credited with spectacular transformations. What is the reality? Here is an honest guide that separates the technique, the facts and the fantasies.

What Does Mewing Consist Of?

Mewing relies on a precise tongue posture: the entire tongue, from the tip to its base, is pressed against the roof of the mouth. The tip sits just behind the upper incisors without touching them, and the rest of the tongue follows the palatal vault. The lips are closed, the teeth lightly touching or very close, and breathing happens exclusively through the nose.

The stated goal: making this position your tongue's natural resting posture, twenty-four hours a day. For many beginners, the surprise is discovering that their tongue usually rests on the floor of the mouth, often linked to chronic mouth breathing.

What the Science Actually Says

Let us be clear: to date, no solid scientific study demonstrates that mewing reshapes the bone structure of an adult face. Facial bone growth is essentially complete by the end of adolescence. The spectacular before-and-after transformations circulating online are most often explained by natural growth in young subjects, changes in weight, lighting or camera angle, or even retouching.

However, correct tongue posture is not an invention: it is a recognized concept in orthodontics and speech therapy, notably in the rehabilitation of atypical swallowing patterns. What mewing can reasonably deliver:

  • Improved nasal breathing, with its documented benefits for sleep and oxygenation.
  • Better jaw and neck carriage, which improves the appearance of the profile without changing bone.
  • A reduction in the open-mouth posture, which is unflattering and associated with mouth breathing.
  • Greater body awareness of the orofacial area.

In adolescents who are still growing, tongue posture plays a more significant role in facial development, but that is a matter for orthodontic care, not online tutorials.

How to Practice Correctly

If you want to adopt mewing for its postural and respiratory benefits, proceed as follows. Pronounce the sound "ng" as in the word "sing": the position your tongue takes at that moment is close to the target posture. Memorize the sensation, then aim to return to it regularly throughout the day.

A few markers to do it right:

  • The entire tongue is on the palate, not just the tip.
  • No pressure on the teeth: the push goes upward, onto the palate.
  • The jaw stays relaxed, never clenched.
  • Nasal breathing must remain comfortable at all times.

In the first days, the base of the tongue tires quickly: this is normal, as these muscles usually work very little. Use regular reminders rather than continuous forcing.

Limits and Precautions to Know

Mewing practiced obsessively or incorrectly can generate jaw tension, temporomandibular joint pain or headaches. If you experience persistent pain, clicking or discomfort when opening your mouth, stop and consult a dentist or a specialist.

Furthermore, if you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose, never force it: chronic nasal obstruction, a deviated septum or allergies are treated medically. See an ENT specialist before any nasal breathing work.

Our Verdict

Mewing is neither a miracle cure nor complete nonsense. It is a postural rehabilitation tool with modest but real benefits: better breathing, better head carriage, a more toned profile. Adopt it for those reasons, with calibrated expectations, and integrate it into a global approach including chewing, sleep and posture. It is in that combination, not in the tongue alone, that the real results lie.
